A Muslim’s every state should be entrusted to Allah. That is, in every situation, the connection with Allah should be maintained, and this is what Allah’s Prophet (PBUH) demonstrated by acting upon it, as mentioned in the Hadith: “Sleep is the sibling of death,” and when a person sleeps, it is as if he is in the state of death, and when he wakes up, it is as if he has escaped from the clutches of death.
There are many people whose breaths do not revive after sleep, and they meet death. This is why our beloved Prophet (PBUH) taught us that in every condition, Allah (Rab) should be remembered, even if death comes in such a state that a person dies while remembering Allah (Rab), and as long as a person is alive, their life should be for the sake of Allah alone.
Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:
“When any of you lies down on your bed, first shake your bed with the corner of your sheet, for you do not know what might have settled on it in your absence.”
After shaking the bed, recite this dua:
“O my Lord, with Your name, I lay my side down, and with Your name, I will rise. If You take my soul, then have mercy on it, and if You return it, then protect it in the way You protect Your righteous servants.”
(Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)
In this Hadith, the Prophet (PBUH) taught us the etiquette of sleeping by advising us to shake our bed before lying down and check if there is anything harmful that could hurt us. We are also taught to always seek mercy from Allah and stay under His protection through prayers. This is where our well-being and goodness lie.
