Ayatul Kursi is Verse (Ayat) number 255 of Surah Al-Baqarah, which is the Second Chapter of the Holy Quran. It is located on the first page of the 3rd Para (Tilkar Rusul – تِلْكَ الرُّسُلُ ) of the Holy Quran.

اَللّٰهُ لَآ اِلـٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ ۚ اَلْحَىُّ الْقَيُّوْمُ ۚ لَا تَأْخُذُهٗ سِنَةٌ وَّلَا نَوْمٌ ؕ لَهٗ مَا فِى السَّمَـٰوٰتِ وَمَا فِى الْاَرْضِ ؕ مَنْ ذَا الَّذِىْ يَشْفَعُ عِنْدَهٗٓ اِلَّا بِاِذْنِهٖ ؕ يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ اَيْدِيْهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ ۚ وَلَا يُحِيْطُوْنَ بِشَىْءٍ مِّنْ عِلْمِهٖٓ اِلَّا بِمَا شَآءَ ۚ وَسِعَ كُرْسِيُّهُ السَّمَـٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضَ ۚ وَلَا يَـُٔوْدُهٗ حِفْظُهُمَا ۚ وَهُوَ الْعَلِىُّ الْعَظِيْمُ
Allah-u-Laa ilaaha illa huwa. Al-Hayyul-Qayyoom. Laa ta’khuzuhu sinatun wa laa naum. Lahu maa fis-samaawaati wa maa fil-ard. Man zallazi yashfa’u ‘indahu illa bi-iznih. Ya’lamu maa baina aydihim wa maa khalfahum. Wa laa yuheetoona bishai’im min ‘ilmihi illa bimaa shaa’. Wasi’a kursiyyuhus-samaawaati wal-ard. Wa laa ya’ooduhu hifzuhumaa. Wa huwal ‘Aliyyul-‘Azeem.
آیت الکرسی – Urdu Translation
اللّٰہ(وہ ہے کہ) اس کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں، وہ زندہ جاوید (اور) قائم ودائم ہے۔ اُسے اونگھ آتی ہے نہ نیند، اُسی کا ہے جو کچھ آسمانوں میں ہےاور جو کچھ زمین میں ہے۔ کون ہے ہو جواس کے ہاں سفارش کر سکے مگر اُس کی اجازت سے؟ وہ جانتا ہے جو کچھ لوگوں کے سامنے ہے اور جو کچھ ان کے پیچھےہے۔ اور وہ اس کے علم میں سے کسی چیز کا احاطہ نہیں کر سکتے مگر جس قدر وہ خود چاہے۔ اس کی کرسی نے آسمانوں اور زمین کو گھیرے رکھا ہے اور اسے دونوں کی حفاظت نہیں تھکاتی اور وہ بلند تر، نہایت عظمت والا ہے۔
Throne Verse English Translation
Allah—There is no God worthy of worship except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation does not tire Him. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.
Roman Urdu Translation of Ayat Kursi
Allah (Woh hai ke) us ke siwa koi ma’bood nahi, woh zinda javed (aur) qayam-o-daim hai. Usay oongh aati hai na neend. Usi ka hai jo kuch asmanon mein hai aur jo kuch zameen mein hai. Kaun hai jo us ke haan sifarish kar sake magar us ki ijazat se? Woh jaanta hai jo kuch logon ke samne hai aur jo kuch un ke peechay hai. Aur woh us ke ilm mein se kisi cheez ka ihata nahi kar sakte magar jis qadar woh khud chahe. Us ki Kursi ne asmanon aur zameen ko ghere rakha hai aur usay dono ki hifazat nahi thakati, aur woh buland tar, nihayat azmat wala hai.
आयतुल कुर्सी – Hindi Translation
अल्लाह (वह है कि) उसके सिवा कोई माबूद नहीं, वह ज़िंदा जावेद (और) क़ायम-ओ-दायम है। उसे ऊंघ आती है न नींद। उसी का है जो कुछ आसमानों में है और जो कुछ ज़मीन में है। कौन है जो उसके यहाँ सिफ़ारिश कर सके मगर उसकी इजाज़त से? वह जानता है जो कुछ लोगों के सामने है और जो कुछ उनके पीछे है। और वे उसके ज्ञान में से किसी चीज़ का احाता नहीं कर सकते मगर जितना वह खुद चाहे। उसकी कुर्सी ने आसमानों और ज़मीन को घेर रखा है और उसे दोनों की हिफ़ाज़त नहीं थकाती, और वह बुलंदतर, निहायत अज़मत वाला है।
What Is Ayatul Kursi
As I mentioned above “Ayat ul Kursi” is Verse No. 255 of Surah Baqarah. It is a single Verse (Ayat). The meaning of Ayatul Kursi word is “Throne of Allah” (Allah Ka Arsh – اللہ کاعرش), that’s why it is also termed as “Throne Verse”.
Importance of Ayatul Kursi In Light Of Hadiths
Ayatul Kursi is one of the most powerful and revered verses in the Holy Quran. It holds immense virtues and is considered the most superior verse in the Quran.
According to a hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) asked Abu Bin Kaab (R.A.):
“Do you know which verse in the Book of Allah is the greatest?”
Abu Bin Kaab (R.A.) replied, “Allah and His Messenger (PBUH) know best.”
The Prophet (PBUH) repeated the question again: “Do you know which verse in the Book of Allah is the greatest?”
He answered, “Allahu La Ilaha Illa Huwa…”
Upon hearing this, “The Prophet (PBUH) placed his hand on my chest and said, “Abu Al-Mundhir, may knowledge be blessed for you.”
In another hadith, it is mentioned:
Abu Dharr Al-Ghifari (R.A.) narrates: “I asked, O Messenger of Allah (PBUH), which is the greatest verse revealed to you?”
The Prophet (PBUH) replied, “Ayatul Kursi – Allahu La Ilaha Illa Huwa Al-Hayyul Qayyum.”
The Story of Hazrat Abu Huraira (R.A) and Satan/Devil – The Power of Ayatul Kursi
Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) appointed me to guard the Zakat of Ramadan.
One night, suddenly, a man came and started taking from the food. I caught him and said, “By Allah! I will take you to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH).”
That man said, “By Allah! I am very needy. I have small children, and I am in extreme difficulty.” Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) said, “I felt pity for him due to his plea, so I let him go.”
In the morning, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) asked me, “O Abu Huraira! What did your prisoner say last night?”
I replied, “O Messenger of Allah (PBUH), he complained of great need and his children’s hardship, so I took pity on him and released him.”
The Prophet (PBUH) said, “He lied to you, and he will return.”
Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) said, “Because of the Prophet’s (PBUH) statement, I was sure that he would come again. So, I waited for him. The next night, he came again and started taking food. I caught him and said, ‘This time, I will definitely take you to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH).’
But once again, he pleaded, “Let me go. I am very poor, and I have children to care for. I will never return.” I felt pity for him again and let him go.
In the morning, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) asked, “O Abu Huraira! What did your prisoner do this time?”
I replied, “O Messenger of Allah (PBUH), he repeated the same plea about his dire need and his children, so I let him go.”
The Prophet (PBUH) said again, “He lied to you, and he will return.”
On the third night, I stayed alert. When he came again and started taking food, I caught him and said, “Now, I must take you to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH). This is the third time! Every time you promise not to return, yet you come back.”
The man (thief) said, “If you let me go this time, I will teach you some words that will benefit you from Allah.”
I asked, “What are those words?”
He said, “When you go to bed, recite Ayat-ul-Kursi: ‘Allahu la ilaha illa huwal hayyul qayyum’ completely. An angel will be appointed by Allah to protect you, and no devil will come near you until morning.” So, I let him go.
In the morning, the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) asked, “O Abu Huraira! What happened with your prisoner last night?”
I replied, “O Messenger of Allah (PBUH), he taught me some words and assured me that Allah would benefit me through them, so I let him go.”
The Prophet (PBUH) asked, “What were those words?”
I said, “He told me to recite Ayat-ul-Kursi before sleeping, from ‘Allahu la ilaha’ to the end. He also told me that Allah would appoint an angel to guard me, and no devil would come near me until morning.”
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “Though he is a liar, he has told you the truth.”
Then the Prophet (PBUH) asked, “O Abu Huraira! Do you know who you were dealing with these past three nights?”
Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) replied, “No.”
The Prophet (PBUH) said, “That was Satan/Devil!”

Ayatul Kursi ki Fazilat – Virtues of Ayatul Kursi
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:
“Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi after every obligatory prayer, nothing stands between him and Paradise except death.”
(This means as soon as he passes away, he will enter Jannah.)
Importance of Reciting Ayatul Kursi Before Sleeping
The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“When you go to your bed, recite Ayatul Kursi. Allah will appoint a guardian for your protection, and no shaitan will come near you until morning.”
Benefits Of Reciting Ayat ul Kursi
The incident of Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) and Shaitan/Devil, teaches us the great virtue of reciting Ayatul Kursi and the immense blessings of its protection. Even though Satan always tries to mislead humans, in this case, he himself admitted that reciting Ayat ul Kursi appoints a guardian angel by Allah, who protects the believer throughout the night and prevents Satan from coming near.
This hadith also teaches us that beneficial knowledge should be accepted wherever it comes from, even if it is from an enemy or Satan, as long as it is true and in accordance with the Quran and Sunnah.
